When being aware of our calorie intake, which we should almost always do, we tend to not count the things we drink or that we don’t consider a snack or meal….right?
It is so easy to consume hundreds of calories in our beverages if we’re not careful to find out how many calories are in them. And good marketing is making it even more difficult! It’s GREEN so it should be healthy…or it’s loaded with fruits and veggies…
Let’s take a look at a few:
Green Tea Frappuccino
It’s green tea for goodness sakes so it can’t be all that bad, right? Wrong! A Grande Starbucks Green Tea Latte has 430 cals and 65 g sugar; that’s 16.25 teaspoons of sugar! (To calculate the sugar divide the grams by 4 and that is how many teaspoons it equals)
And if you’re thinking that another frappucinno is a better choice, think again. They do offer light versions is you want to save lots of calories!
Amazing Greens Jamba Juice
Pretty amazing alright! A medium has 500 cals and 73g sugar! That’s 18.25 g sugar!
Cinnamon Roll Coffee Chillata
This one’s a real doozie! 24 oz will get you 1030 calories and 126 g sugar! And when I talked to the young lady behind the counter to get an empty cup for my tv segment, she told me there’s a new one coming out that will include chunks of a cinnabon cinnamon roll!
Odwalla Original Superfood Green Smoothie
Superfood or super high calories? 240 cals and 51 g sugar. But hey, the label says that it has the juice of 2 1/2 apples, 1/2 peach, 1/3 mango, 1/4 banana, spirulina and 55 mg kale. How about eating some of that fruit and more of that kale so you’ll get tons more fiber, far less sugar and be satieted longer? Can you imagine eating all that fruit and veggie in one sitting?
Can I just say no? A couple splashes of the regular kind will get you approx 100 cals in one cup of coffee (and how many cups/day do you have?). The sugar free has about 15 cals/tbsp but check out the ingredients; nothing that I’d want to put into my body on a regular basis!
All those fun pretty drinks are especially loaded with calories. Many contain simple syrup which is equal parts sugar and water. And all those pretty colors? Unless the color comes from fresh fruit (not likely), it means hyou’re getting even more unwanted cals!
Make your own skinny simple syrup:
*Boil 1 cup water and add 3 grams Stevia; stir until dissolved. You can flavor it by also adding things such as mint leaves and let it steep for 30 minutes.
This Skinny Watermelon Mojito has only 100 calories instead of 240-300 and it tastes delicious and refreshing!
- 2 oz skinny simple syrup
- 1 0z light rum (light refers to color not cals)
- 4 mint leaves (or however much you like)
- 1 cup watermelon pureed
- juice of 1/2 lime
- Club soda
In a glass, pour simple syrup, rum, and lime juice. Add the mint leaves and muddle. (I love that word! Here’s a link if you don’t know how to correctly muddle!) http://drinks.seriouseats.com/2011/05/cocktail-101-how-to-muddle-mint-herbs-how-to-make-a-mojito.html
Add pureed watermelon then the ice. Top it off with club soda. Add a sprig of mint, perhaps a tiny slice of watermelon and WHALAH! Delightful without damaging calories!
Maybe you would never even consider consuming some of the high cal beverages mentioned above. But the point is, read labels, use apps on your phone, measure and find out how many calories you’re really consuming and then will be able to lose the wieght you want or maintain the healthy body you have!
